The Brief

Apple TV+ requested custom Twitter hashflag illustrations to accompany the official Apple hashtags for the launch of Tom Hanks's WWII epic Greyhound, and Ewan McGregor's South to North America motorcycle trek series Long Way Up.

The Work

Translating the details of a WWII destroyer and a Harley Davidson LiveWire electric motorbike into miniature, instantly-recognizable icons was a welcome challenge.

Taking a cue from the existing cruise ship and motorcycle of Apple's native library emojis, I decided to show only the front half of the destroyer to allow the deck armaments and hull details to be more visible, and show the motorbike in a side profile.

For the LiveWire bike—the most identifiable features were the unique shape of the windscreen, the prominent battery casing, and total lack of an exhaust pipe. Making those details visible at small scale meant adjusting color and shape contrast and including details help orient your eye—like reflectors, handlebars, and wheels.

The hashflags successfully launched on Twitter and accompanied the official hashtags for the entire marketing run for each IP, boosting engagement and creating a limited-time-only sense of urgency around each launch.
