Ceramics

The Work

My ceramics practice features a technique called sgraffito—the art of carving into underglaze on leather-hard clay. It's the perfect marriage of printmaking, drawing, and sculpting that my brain craves. And because you never know what the kiln gods will frown upon, ceramics has taught me not to be precious about the things I'm making.

It's been a joy to be in the ceramics studio at Pour Vida, making objects with my hands, and forming lumps of clay into beautiful pieces that I get to share with others.

I participated in Game of Shrooms in June 2026, and it was astounding to me how many folks were waiting in line to snag one of my free mushroom wall shrines. I gave a gift to them, and in turn they gifted me with motivation to keep making weird little clay things that make me (and others!) happy.

The Details

Clay: I typically work with B-Mix with speckles. Fired to Cone 6.

Underglazes: Work with Amaco velvet underglazes mostly bc I love how high-contrast they are with the speckled b-mix clay.

Glaze: Over the sgraffito work, I use a clear glaze to make items food-safe.

Safety: Clear-glazed items are dishwasher and microwave safe, but I always recommend handwashing to extend the life of the object.
